Who We Work With
We work with people who have various disabilities. Historically, many of our divers have mobility issues, but the program is open to a wider variety of people. Some of the more common conditions for adaptive divers are:
- Spinal cord injuries
- Traumatic brain injury
- Amputees and double amputees
- Multiple sclerosis
- Automomic dysreflexia
- Cerebral Palsy
- Parkinson’s Disease
- PTSD
- Visual or hearing impairment
If you aren’t sure whether you’re a candidate for the program, we hope you’ll contact us so we can learn more about your situation.
Minimum Age
All persons joining the program must be at least 10 years old.
Medical Considerations
The medical considerations for adaptive divers can be very complex.
Absolute contraindications to scuba include internal defibrillators, pace-makers, or ventricular devices; mechanically assisted breathing; medicated patches or internal pumps for pain management or muscle spasms; or a VP shunt.
All students must complete a medical evaluation with their doctor prior to any in-water work. Please see the Training Process page for more information about completing the required paperwork.
